Two things you have to know before reading my post: for the poor and minorities, more than a quarter of a million children in California's schools are in crisis lacking technology. The second thing is about LAUSD's "iPad for everyone" program.
Here comes the question: what's the technology they lack? No, no, not the mobile devices or educational apps, what they really need is a technology created nearly 8oo years ago- eyeglasses.
Nearly 250,000 California school children still don't have the right prescription glasses for vision correction and suffer from the blurry world. And about 95% public students go to school without glasses even though they need spectacles. So for those kids, let's think which is more needed for kids: iPad or eyeglasses?
Whether as a parent or a member of this society, we are responsible to help all the kids to grow up safely and healthily. And the first step is to learn what kids really need. The eye care for kids would be the top priority. So we should do our best to help these kids who are suffering a blurry world. High tech products like iPad may be arranged far away from eyeglasses on the need list for kids.
So let's learn more about kids and give what they really want. Start with giving them eyeglasses.
